The merchant from which you are buying a product or service makes a portion of the balance of your checking account unavailable until your transaction is settled. - When you book a hotel for a reservation, they take your credit card information (number, expiration date, security code).
- The financial institution of your credit card places a hold on a predetermined amount of your funds in your account which reduces your credit limit.
- A predetermined amount of your funds may be more than the cost of the stay. It is set by the hotel.
- The hold stays on your account until you check out of the hotel.
- After checking out of the hotel, your charge is submitted for settling. The hold is removed from your account.
- The funds are transferred from your account to the hotel. It can take up to eight days for the hold to be released through your bank, based on how often the bank settles its pre-authorizations.

Car rental companies often hold more money that is involved in a transaction so that they can cover damage to the car. Late Payment Hold
Your card can also be held if you have a late payment on your credit card. If you have a good credit history, the lending institution may report you to one of the credit reporting agencies for only one late payment but allow you to continue to use the card. If you keep making late payments, your card will be cut off through administrative hold.
To use your card again in the case of late payments, you must show the financial institution several months of on-time payments before they will permit you to use your card again. If not, they may cancel your card and your credit score will be badly affected.
Many cardholders prefer to have their payments automatically deducted from their checking account on or before the due date and sent to the card company through electronic funds transfer. This goes a long way to avoid late payments.

- Before booking a hotel reservation or renting a car, inquire about their credit card hold policy and the amount of the hold.
- Always check your credit limit on your card and your available balance. Ensure that your credit card can pay for the hotel or car with the same card with which you made the reservation.
- If you can, always go out with two cards so that if one is declined, you may use the other.
- Always tell the merchant to remove the hold the moment you pay your final bill. If they won’t, ask them to specify exactly how many days it will take for removal.
